All roles are governed by ScholarFront’s policies (see Policies).

  1. Editor-in-Chief / Co-Editor (Journal-level)

Role summary: Lead the journal’s editorial strategy, uphold peer review quality, oversee editorial board appointments and make final publication decisions.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide academic leadership and set journal scope/strategic aims.
  • Oversee peer review processes and editorial workflows.
  • Appoint and coordinate Associate Editors and Editorial Board members.
  • Ensure ethical standards and adherence to ScholarFront policies.
  • Represent the journal in indexing, outreach and special issue planning.

Qualifications & experience

  • Established research record in the journal’s discipline.
  • Prior editorial experience or demonstrated leadership in scholarly activities.
  • Strong commitment to open access and publishing ethics.
  • Ability to dedicate the time required for editorial duties.

Term & workload

  • Typical appointment: 3 years (renewable). Time commitment depends on submission volume.

 

  1. Associate Editor / Section Editor

Role summary: Handle assigned submissions, select reviewers, make recommendations to EiC, and contribute to editorial strategy.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage assigned submissions through peer review.
  • Identify and invite appropriate reviewers.
  • Ensure timely, fair editorial decisions.
  • Contribute to journal development (special issues, calls for papers).

Qualifications

  • Active researcher with relevant expertise and prior peer review experience.

 

  1. Editorial Board Member

Role summary: Provide subject-matter oversight, review manuscripts, endorse journal quality and promote the journal.

Responsibilities

  • Review manuscripts as invited.
  • Advise on journal scope, special issues and strategy.
  • Promote the journal within professional networks.

 

  1. Peer Reviewer (Ad hoc / Regular)

Role summary: Provide timely, constructive and unbiased peer reviews.

Reviewer expectations

  • Deliver fair, thorough reviews within agreed timeframes (typically 2–4 weeks).
  • Declare conflicts of interest and maintain confidentiality.
  • Use ethical, constructive language and provide clear recommendations.

Recognition

  • Reviewer names may be included in annual reviewer acknowledgement pages (unless reviewers opt out). Certificates or ORCID recognition (review activity badges) can be provided on request.

Remuneration

  • Reviewer roles are generally voluntary; any honorarium or paid review schemes (if introduced) will be stated on the specific journal page.

 

Volunteer & Internship Opportunities

ScholarFront offers structured volunteering and internship roles aimed at early-career researchers and students who want practical experience in publishing.

Typical roles

  • Editorial assistant: assist with pre-checks, copyediting coordination, screening for compliance.
  • Copyediting intern: support basic language/format checks (not final copyediting).
  • Metadata & indexing assistant: help prepare machine-readable metadata, test feeds for indexers.
  • Outreach & communications volunteer: support social media, calls for papers, and event coordination.

Duration & time commitment

  • Internships: 3–6 months (part-time, ~10–20 hours/week) — flexible arrangements possible.
  • Volunteers: ongoing or short-term commitments; tasks and hours agreed with the supervisor.

Supervision & training

  • Each intern/volunteer receives a named mentor (editorial staff) and an onboarding checklist. Accredited training resources and reading materials (copyediting basics, peer review ethics, metadata standards) will be provided.

How to apply

  • Use the Apply / Upload CV form and select “Internship” or “Volunteer.” Include a short cover letter describing interests and weekly availability.

 

Selection process & timelines

Editorial roles

  • Acknowledgement of application within 7 working days.
  • Preliminary review by the editorial committee (2–4 weeks).
  • Shortlisted candidates may be invited for a short interview (email or video).
  • Final decision and appointment letter issued; typical total timeframe: 4–8 weeks.

Reviewers & volunteers

  • Acknowledgement within 7 working days.
  • Screening of CV and experience; onboarding for selected candidates typically within 2–4 weeks.

Onboarding & expectations

  • Appointees are expected to complete an onboarding pack: role description, ScholarFront policies (Ethics & Integrity; Peer Review), conflict of interest declaration, non-disclosure agreement (where applicable), and training materials.
  • Editors and reviewers must complete a conflict-of-interest declaration before handling manuscripts.
  • Failure to meet expected duties (e.g., repeated missed review deadlines) may result in removal from roles following a fair review.

 

Recognition, conflicts of interest & confidentiality

  • ScholarFront lists editors and editorial board members on journal pages, with affiliations and ORCID (with consent).
  • Reviewer confidentiality is strictly enforced. Reviewer identities are not disclosed without explicit consent (except where open peer review is adopted).
  • All contributors must declare conflicts of interest; editors with conflicts will recuse themselves from handling related manuscripts.

 

 

FAQs — Join Us

Q — Is the editorial role paid?
A — Editorial positions are primarily academic service roles; remuneration varies by journal and will be explicitly stated in any job advertisement. Reviewer work is typically voluntary; recognition and certificates are provided.

Q — Can I be on multiple editorial boards?
A — Yes — scholars often serve on multiple boards. Editors should disclose commitments to manage conflicts of interest and workload.

Q — Do volunteers get certificates?
A — Yes — volunteers and interns receive certificates and recommendation letters after successful completion of assigned tasks.

Q — Will my CV be shared publicly?
A — No. Applications are confidential. With your consent we may list your name and affiliation on the journal site if appointed.
