The article I chose to use is “Excessive use of technology: Can tech providers be the culprits? Seeking to assess the possible responsibility of tech providers for excessive use patterns” by Ofir Turel and Christopher Ferguson. The article’s main topic is to discuss the possible responsibility of big tech companies contributing to individuals’ excessive use of technologies such as social media, video games, and streaming services.
One expert contributing to this article is Nir Eyal and his book “Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products.” This author contributed to the conversation through the offering of research to the person who wrote the article. The book written by Eyal and Hoover touches on how big tech companies use what he refers to as the hook model to gain the wanted engagement needed to boost their product (Eyal & Hoover, 2014). This helps to support the possibility of companies being responsible for the excessive use of their technology. For the second author, I chose the article “Internet Addiction in adolescence: Neurobiological, psychosocial and clinical issues” by L Cerniglia, F Zoratto, S Cimino, G Laviola, M Ammaniti, and W Adriani. These authors contribute to Turel and Ferguson’s article by giving information such as how technology addiction in adolescence can lead to mental health issues and negative daily life issues ( Cerniglia et al., 2017).
I feel that I could personally contribute to this article by offering my experiences with technology since most of us have spent our whole life using it. I could touch on differences I have noticed in myself and my work ethic since receiving my first smartphone that could access the internet.
I think it is essential to know that scholarship is an ongoing conversation because it allows us to become more involved in the conversation. Knowing this information can help us improve upon scholarship by adding information or challenging the viewpoint.  Doing this will help to grow the data and create a better source.

The article I chose is Adolescents Sleep Quality and Internet Addiction. This article talks about the relationship between internet addiction and low-quality sleep. In this study they found that many factors contribute to bad sleep within adolescents. There are variances between effects of internet addiction and the age of the child. Internet addiction is especially prevalent in teens between the ages of 15-18, because they’re reportedly spending 1/3 of the days on social media(Agarwal A.K, Et Al, 2020 ). Blue light exposure, mental immaturity and increased levels of anxiety all play a role in worsening sleep quality. All these components which can be linked to smart phones, social media, and the readily available access to the internet. This phenomenon is relatively new to the up-and-coming generations and long-term effects on health are still being researched. It is however proven that in the short term, sleep is suffering due to internet usage. As well as the immediate serotonin gratification we have become accustomed to with the internet.
The author has many references at end of this journal meaning that many people have helped contribute to this area of research. I feel that I could contribute to this conversation by reflecting on my habits with social media usage. How I have been affected by the internet in the past, and what tips I have incorporated into my daily life to lessen the effects of social media on my overall health. As a student it is important to understand that scholarship is an ongoing conversation because information is constantly evolving. New research surfaces, and the knowledge as we know it becomes a little different. This is all a part of the growth process.
