Overview: In this homework, you will be estimating the cost of the cut and fill earth work needed for each proposed pipeline (green and red). You will first need to calculate the area of each cut and fill using the longitudinal profiles in the provided .dwg file. You will practice using two different methods for your area calculations. Afterward, you will use your area results to calculate the total volume of soil that will need to be moved prior to construction. Below you will find more detailed instructions. Formulas have already been added to the Excel file, so be careful if you need to delete information in cells that you don’t accidently lose the pre-filled formulas. Also, notice that there are 3 different sheets in the Excel file (see the tabs at the bottom). You must complete all 3 sheets. The first is for the green pipeline, the second is for the red pipeline, and the third is for your conclusions. Method 1: Use the MEASUREGEOM Area tool in AutoCAD to directly measure the area of each cut and fill region. The cut and fill regions are the areas between the ground level and project level (see lab session slides for drawings of this). The regions are marked above with a P1, P2, P3, etc., and correspond to the column names in the Method 1 area of the spreadsheets. You will need to enter the following for both pipelines: 1. Enter your area measurements in the row marked “Long. Area[m2]” 1 of 4 a. Don’t forget to divide the measured area by 10 (this is because we scaled the horizontal (dx) by 10 when drawing the profile) 2. Enter the width of the pipeline’s cross section (see W in Figure 1 below) in the row marked “Cross Width [m]” 3. Calculate and enter the Total Cost (based on the Total Volume [cy] and the Total Excavate and Fill $/CY listed in the spreadsheets) using cost table in the spreadsheet (Figure 2). Figure 1. Figure 2. Method 2: Next you will use the Average End Area Method to calculate the area of the pipeline cross sections marked in the longitudinal profile with A1, A2, A3, etc. (which correspond to the column names in the Method 2 section of the Excel sheets). You will be using the cross-section areas of each cut and fill to find the total volume of the earthwork. See Figure 3 below for an illustration of what this looks like. You will need to enter the following for both pipelines: 1. Enter the pipeline cross-section width (See Figure 2 below) 2. Use the MEASUREGEOM Distance tool to find the height of each cross section (difference in elevation between Ground Level and Project Level) 3. Calculate the Longitudinal Length (L1-2, L2-3, L3-4, etc.) between each cross section using basic trigonometry (Pythagorean Theorem, a2 + b2 = c2). However, since the formulas have already been pre-entered into the spreadsheet for you, all you need to do is: a. measure dx, the horizontal distance between each set of consecutive cross sections relative to the Project Level (See Figure 4 below) i. Divide by 10 (remember that we scaled the AutoCAD units when drawing the profile) b. measure dy, the vertical distance between each set of consecutive cross sections relative to the Project Level (See Figure 4 below) 4.
