Writing Guidelines

Step 1. State the claim.
1a.State the claim you are critiquing in the assignment in your own words as clearly and specifically as possible.

1b.Identify any jargon or words you do not understand and define them.

Step 2. Examine the evidence.
2a.The next stage is to consider what reasons there are for accepting and rejecting the claim. To start, identify what empirical and logical arguments are used to support the hypothesis.

2b.For the evidence in support of the hypothesis you have identified, are there any reasonable doubts regarding this evidence? Consider the following questions when assessing the quality of the evidence: Are the arguments in support of the claim fallacious, or in other words, are the premises true? What type of argument is used to support the claim?

2c.Based upon your analysis of the evidence supporting the claim, should any of the evidence be disregarded? Why, or why not?

2d.Given your examination of the evidence, draw a conclusion about whether the hypothesis in question actually explains the evidence. For example, consider whether important factors are explained with the hypothesis or not.

Step 3. Consider alternative hypotheses.
3a.State any alternative hypotheses for the evidence. There may be more than one alternative hypothesis for the evidence. State all that you can think of. State the alternative hypothesis (or hypotheses) in your own words as clearly and specifically as possible.

3b.Again, identify any jargon or words you do not understand and define them.

3c.For each of the alternative hypotheses identified, follow steps 2a through 2d (included below) to examine the evidence of each hypothesis. Consider what reasons there are for accepting and rejecting the claim. To start, identify what empirical and logical arguments are used to support the hypothesis.

3d.If you have identified more than one alternate hypothesis, you will need to select just one of these alternate hypotheses after examining the evidence but before the next stage. Consider which alternate hypothesis has the strongest supporting evidence.

Step 4. Rate according to the criteria of adequacy each hypothesis.
4a.It is now time to weigh the two competing hypotheses. To determine which explanation is best, apply the criteria of adequacy. Examine both hypotheses and justify your answers to each of the questions. Start by restating the two hypotheses under examination.

4b.First, consider the testability of each hypothesis. That is, can each of the hypotheses can be tested (is there any way to determine whether the hypothesis is false)?

4c.Next consider the fruitfulness of each hypothesis. Do the hypotheses produce observable, surprising predictions that explain new phenomena?

4d.Thirdly, consider the scope of each hypothesis. Consider how many different phenomena can be explained using each hypothesis.

4e.Next consider the simplicity of each hypothesis. Ask, is this hypothesis the simplest explanation for the phenomenon?

4f.And finally consider the conservatism of each hypothesis. That is, is the hypothesis consistent with our well-founded beliefs?

Step 5. Draw a conclusion.
5a.Based upon your examination of the original and alternate hypotheses, draw a conclusion about the original hypothesis, and justify your decision.
