The total word count for this task is 2,000 words. This will include:

  • A brief introduction to the area(s) – if you would like to split the sections on how students learn and the physical, social and intellectual aspects of learning, you may do so but it is advised you provide a brief introduction to each
  • The full reference in APA 6th edition format
  • A summary of the reference including the main points
  • A statement about what the key message being conveyed by the author(s) is
  • Strengths and limitations of the work

At the end of the annotated bibliography, provide a summary about what the six articles in combination might tell us about learning and development theories in education. This summary should include implications for teachers.

Project Outline

For this task, you will undertake a review of the contemporary literature on learning and development. You will need to find and discuss readings that focus on both of the following areas:

  • the physical, social and intellectual aspects of student learning

It is expected that the references you choose to review will adequately cover these areas.

You will prepare an annotated bibliography including six key references from the diverse literature on learning and development in education, the learning sciences, and/or educational psychology. You may use the readings included in this course, but you must find at least three other readings to include in your bibliography. You may include other readings if you wish but the maximum number of readings you can include from those included in the course is three. Readings you can choose from include:

  • Chapters from the required/recommended text book (1 maximum)
  • Chapters from another textbook or edited book (1 maximum)
  • Journal articles from the readings in the course (3 maximum)
  • Other journal articles published since 2010 (At least 1)

Explanation of the task could include these points :-

  1. As described in the task description, in your selections, consider all the aspects (how students learn and the physical, social and intellectual aspects of learning).
  2. Your annotated bibliography is a wide selection of sources relevant to adolescent development and learning.  Many quality articles and chapters will show the cross-over between the 3 different aspects of development (since they all exist in each student). But an article or chapter will have a focus, and that does not make it a limitation of that article. Eg don’t say the chapter doesn’t look at xyz, when the chapter is about abc
  3. It is not suggested that you look for a theme that runs across all of your entries because not many themes give you the scope you need to cover how all 3 aspects of development and the science of learning can be seen. Perhaps deep learning or Bandura, for instance, might be used to discuss all 3 developmental aspects and the science of learning, but you may not find physical development gets covered adequately.  You would need a separate entry that looks at physical development.
  4. Each of the different aspects may need a quick introduction if they have not featured in previous selected sources. For example, a sentence or 2 to introduce the physical aspects of development may be sufficient.
  5. Do not choose non-academic sources, instead, use academic sources like book chapters and journal articles. Academic literature is peer reviewed, ie other recognised experts in the field have evaluated the work. Do NOT use websites. Journal articles can be current and they often show you where the limitations of their research lies.
  6. Use critical thinking.  Scaffold why those 3 developmental aspects are important – and think critically about that – eg perhaps the writer might have included the impact of emotion in their research findings? Perhaps there are other areas of interest that might be considered?  These may be limitations to the work.
  7. It is better to write specifically about the content of the source you have selected, what it is about, NOT who the writer is and where they come from, unless that is specifically relevant to the limitations of the source.  Say what the strengths are and if you can’t see any limitations, acknowledge that.
  8. The annotations are bibliographic more than an evaluation.  Unless you have chosen a non-academic source, you are not expected to know the field well enough to appraise the expertise of the author or the perceived reputation of the source. And, why choose a non-academic source?
You might critique the relevance of the context to our population, you can critique sample size or representativeness of the sample to the popn, or the general validity or the reliability of the evidence.  Look at the content and look at what it claims to represent. Is it doing that? What does it claim to contribute?  Does the research use a big enough sample to meet that claim?
  9. Write between 250- 280 words per entry so that you have enough word count to include your conclusion.

What each selected reference might look like, eg:

Article 1.
Hattie, J. A. C., & Donoghue, G. M. (2016). Learning strategies: a synthesis and conceptual model. Npj Science of Learning, 1(1). https://doi.org/10.1038/npjscilearn.2016.13

The main focus of this article …….. etc etc

250-280 words

Article 2.
Woolfolk, A., & Margetts, K. (2015). Physical and cognitive development  In Educational psychology. (pp. 67-80) Retrieved from “”

The main focus of this article …….. etc etc

250-280 words
