Erb-Downward and Blakeslee (2021) note that  “(1) Greater economic and housing instability is associated with higher rates of disciplinary action; (2) The association between homelessness and higher rates of disciplinary action persisted even after stable housing was found; (3) A strong intersection exists between race, economic security, and housing stability when it comes to disciplinary action rates for Michigan’s students; and (4) Even very young elementary students who experienced homelessness faced high rates of suspension.” (abstract, p. 1). Does traditional discipline work in these schools for our students that are faced with homelessness? If the goal of discipline is to get rid of problematic behaviors, how does this traditional approach to discipline help students who are homeless? In fact, traditional discipline has been shown to increase the very behaviors that they are supposed to reduce. “In practice, they contribute to the “school-prison pipeline” and further isolate children who often are in dire need of positive relationships and support.” (School House Connection, p. 1).
Adopting the practice of positive school discipline, “positive school discipline adopts a trauma-informed approach to strengthening the capacity of both school staff and students to reduce and prevent inappropriate and disruptive behavior.” (School House Connection, p. 1), tries to uncover the root causes of the student’s misbehavior and incorporate “restorative justice practices” (p. 1) to help students feel more included in our communities instead of the isolation that traditional punishment promotes. Schools need to operate from an informed position as to the trauma that our homeless students face on a daily basis. If a student is habitually late to school, let’s find out why instead of punishing that student. Some students are late because she or he is trying to help younger siblings get to school. Let’s make our schools a safe zone in which all students are comfortable discussing the unique challenges that they face.

The Accredited Schools Online Organization (2021) reports that “data released by the Department of Justice, more than 1.7 million teenagers experience homelessness within the United States each year” (para. 1).  Now this number could possible be drastically more since most students are reluctant in providing actual details of their living situations.  Homelessness is a problem by itself, but is compounded when we start discussing the affects it has on the children who are caught in this dilemma.  The challenges these students will encounter will be the increased chance of becoming a drop out due to instability and the uncertainty of where they may live because they had to leave their community (Withers, n.d.).  This issue begins the snowball effect of one thing leading to another and resulting the child not being able to attend school, to now falling behind, and finally not having the desire in attending school at all.
There are various policies and laws in place to assist homeless kids who are attempting to complete their K-12 and college educations such as (Accredited, 2021, para. 4):
· Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
· Head Start Act
· Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
· Child Nutrition Act
These programs do not directly provide assistance for students that are homeless, but they can provide services that can support these students.  What can be done will be dictated by each school district, and there are a variety of programs out there that are catered to helping out the homeless students and their families such as (Accredited, 2021, para. 7):
· After school programs
· Mentoring and tutoring services
· Temporary housing for homeless families
· Free or discounted meal programs
· 24/7 drop-in centers
· On-site showers
· Apparel donations
A lot of these programs and services might seem simple, but it is because we take them for granted.  Many schools have after school programs and the mentoring and tutoring services, but what surprised me was the temporary housing and 24/7 drop-in centers.  What a great service to provide a student and their family a place to live while they get their feet back up under them.  I feel there are programs and services in-place to support the homeless children, and as teachers we can be cognizant of our students to help identify and get them the help they need.
