Recording Comparison Paper
Paper Length: 3-4 pgs.
Requirements: Double-spaced. Single-spaced heading. Title.
Paper Topic: Analysis of two different performances of the same piece of music.
Assignment: For this assignment, you are to write a comparison paper in which you compare two different recordings of the same piece of Western art music. (In other words, you are going to compare two different artists’ interpretations of the same piece. For example, you might choose to compare two different recordings of Vivaldi Concerto in A Minor for Violin: One played by violinist Itzhak Perlman and one played by violinist Henry Szeryng.)
The point of the paper is to demonstrate your ability to listen closely to two different recordings and apply the appropriate musical vocabulary to describe what you hear.
Please Note: The recordings that you choose MUST BE AVAILABLE ONLINE. I will listen to the recordings as I grade your paper.
Please Note: Your selection should be ~5 minutes long. If you choose a longer piece, you can discuss one movement of that piece. You cannot analyze an incomplete portion of a piece or of a movement of a piece.
Please Note: Your paper must begin with a thesis statement, an underlying point of your entire paper. For example, you might create a thesis statement about the role of the performer in creating musical meaning.
*In order to receive a good grade on this paper, you must go beyond simply listing differences and similarities between the performances and write a paper that supports a thesis statement.
