Creation story paper/presentation

Using graphics, clear format, and searching for new information makes presenters feel good and impresses the rest of the class. Be creative. Be prepared. The assignment must include at least one graphic. Consider a map, a timeline, and image of the times, or even clip art.

Story Title

Author

Students will choose stories, chapters, or sections of works we are studying; due dates are listed on the schedule. Students will need to read each story, research the author and the times, write an assignment according to the notes on this page, and discuss the work/ story briefly in class on the day the work is being discussed. Some websites have discussions about the stories themselves. Students should cite what they use–this is part of a good scholarship and of building credibility. Students should attach their notes on the work to the discussion board on Moodle.

Using graphics, clear format, and searching for new information makes presenters feel good and impresses the rest of the class. Be creative. Be prepared. The assignment must include at least one graphic. Consider a map, a timeline, and image of the times, or even clip art.

The following headings should appear in presentations. (Additional headings might be appropriate for children’s literature, song lyric, poem, play, etc. Student may bring in rough drafts to discuss with me.)

Background of the author (facts/ dates/ information about the writer, culture) Both the text and the outside sources should be used. If the work does not have a specific author, discuss the culture that authored the work.

History: What was going on at the time? Put the story in some sort of context.  Were people at war? Had a king died? Was a major social change coming about?  Develop to give the class a sense of what might have inspired the writing. Use the history to connect to humanity.

Setting: Time, place, situation of the story

Summary (A brief overview to study for the exam) Write about 1-4 paragraphs covering the main idea of the story.

Plot Write the major actions in the story to help the reader keep cause and effect clear.  This is most often done with bulleted actions.

Characters

List the major characters and remind the reader who each one is. Are there any archetypes or standard kinds of characters (the princess, the knight, wicked witch, saint, etc.)?

Terms

What terms need to be defined to help the reader truly understand the story or not be distracted by the unknown?

Tone- what is the overall feel of the story or piece of literature? Is it Dark?  Humorous?  Hopeful?

Symbols- Authors use objects, colors, numbers, etc. to communicate. The broken unicorn in a play may also symbolize a threat or an empty gun an empty threat. A quilt can symbolize the reality of life- pieces of dreams saved and sown together. Find the symbols in the story and explain what those symbols mean.

Themes- Are there particular topics or concepts that keep coming up in the story? Birth? Death? Blood? Ice? War ? Nature? Struggle? Find any themes and label and discuss them.

Explore the meaning of the title. Sometimes the title takes on a new or multi-layered meaning.

My First Impression: Write a paragraph covering your first thoughts about the story and why it appealed or communicated to you.

Thoughts after the research: Did your impression develop or did the research change the view of the story. There is not a wrong answer to this.

Authorial Intention- What was the writer’s purpose in writing? What makes you think so?

What is the cultural relevance? Does this story makeany statement about its times or the beliefs of the writer? Does it continue to influence us today?

Questions to begin class discussion. Help generate a great discussion by finding the crux of the story or the possible areas of confusion. (2-4 questions generally)

For Students Who Are Not Presenting

When students are not presenting, they are still responsible for reading and thinking about the stories assigned. Just as you will want each person in class to have read your story and support you if you get in trouble on a presentation, you need to be prepared to support and protect your classmates. (This support system also leads to better communication in workplace meetings.)

Note Taking

Even though one layer of notes will be presented in class, students need to begin and continue the learning process and add class discussion notes to the handout. The following guidelines should help students summarize notes to better succeed on exams.

What do you bring to the writing? How might your experience color the reading?
