Here are the full instructions for Assignment 2. They are also available in an easier to read format on OneNote Class Notebook in the Content Library in the Assignments tab. Assignment 2: Instructions This assignment is due in Week 10 on Tuesday 11 January, 2021 by 11.59am via the Turnitin link on Moodle. It is worth 30% of your final mark in this unit. This is a challenging assignment so DO NOT leave it till the last minute as it requires significant time and effort. What you have to do: 1. Choose ONE film from the list on Moodle and OneNote. If you want to analyse a film which is NOT on this list, please discuss it first with your teacher. 2. Present a 1500 word (+ or – 10%) analysis of this film. 3a. You must address: a. Narrative elements of the film including i. plot type (see Booker’s Seven Basic Plot Types from Weeks 3 and 4), ii. subplot, iii. iv. flashbacks/forwards, characterisation (arcs) · You also need to specify how these elements or devices contribute to the film – the work sheet entitled Narrative Elements worksheet in the Moodle Resources file and on OneNote should help you do this. This is to help provide you with material for your analysis and should NOT be submitted as part of your analysis. 3b. Cinematic/production elements in the film. · Cinematic/production elements you should analyse are: i. Camera angles, shot size, framing and movement ii. Sound (including music) both diegetic and iii. Lighting iv. Editing non-diegetic sound · You may choose to analyse the entire film OR, more easily, choose ONE key scene and analyse only this. If you choose a scene or sequence include the time in the film e.g. 6 mins 27 seconds – so I can access the correct scenes. · You need to comment on the overall contribution of each element to the artistic presentation of film and its overall message. · There is a worksheet called Cinematic Elements to help you with this – this should be used to provide you with material for your analysis and should NOT be submitted in your analysis. 3c. Theatrical Elements (mise en scene) in the Film or scene from the film: · These include: i. costumes, and make-up ii. props, iii. iv. set design and settings in general and acting choices. · You may either identify and discuss the theatrical elements in an entire film or focus your analysis on ONE scene or sequence. If you choose a scene or sequence include the time in the film e.g. 6 mins 27 seconds – so I can access the correct scenes. · You are required to describe the use of the theatrical element as well as its contribution to the overall message and artistic presentation of the movie or the scene. · Again, there is a worksheet called Questions to Answer about Mise En Scene to help you identify these elements and their effects. Do not submit this as part of your analysis – it is just to help provide you with material for your analysis. · Finally, you should include in text citations and a Reference list – you don’t need to include many sources (four at the most) but you do need to cite and reference the film you have chosen at the very least. Film List CHOOSE ONE FILM FROM THE FOLLOWING LIST TO ANALYSE: Note: If you want to analyse a film that is NOT on this list, please discuss this first with your lecturer.
