Disc.7-McGuire V Madi McGuire posted Dec 12, 2021 12:50 PM ☆ Subscribe With millions of users tweeting, retweeting, liking, or even just reading tweets every hour of every day, Twitter has transitioned from a lighted-hearted platform to a machine of moral ambiguity. Just a couple of personal stories: I woke up at 8 am to find a very graphic video of George Floyd’s death trending on Twitter; BLM protestors were tweeting about police brutality in real-time because the news was not covering the demonstrations or not accurately portraying what was occurring; a fire burning in the Amazon forest was sensationalized until it came out that this was a routine burning that locals did as common farming practice. On one hand, I have to admit that it is a positive that I am able to read a variety of opinions and perspectives as they are tweeted. However, this information is largely unregulated, at times troubling, and subject to the hive-mind of users. So, where do we go from here? Twitter, and the issues it brings, are not going anywhere. We have seen people’s lives ruined by their tweets from years ago resurfacing, false claims running rampant, and even a President permanently suspended from the site. Yet still, it offers the opportunity to learn, grow, and challenge one’s biases all from the comfort of your home. Twitter has already begun to make formal rules, removing tweets and suspending accounts that glorify violence, involve child sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, and more. The formal rules need to exist in conjunction with informal rules that users must make themselves. I use the term informal because the end result should be that users should not spread hatred in any form, but this looks differently to each person. This self-regulation comes from taking time away from social media platforms, self-reflection, and sadly, seeing the consequences of when social media is used for wrong. Anthony Feola- Discussion Forum 3 v ☆ Subscribe Anthony Feola posted Dec 7, 2021 8:46 PM The cinematography in the film Moonlight created visual tension in many different aspects, the one that stood out the most to me was the use of light and dark tones during the filming process and how these tones connected to the overall theme of the movie and its characters. Moonlight takes place in Miami and as audience members, we connect this location to very warm and vibrant colors, in the movie characters, are dealt with very rough circumstances and are portrayed in a very unpleasant area, this use of colors creates visual tension because when we are given glimpses of the happy and beautiful pieces of Miami we see vibrant colors but when we see an event of a character dealing with hardship we often see this use of dark color shots. The last point that I would like to bring up about visual tension in the film is how the cinematography team uses rich colors around the character’s faces I believe that this was done to really make the character pop out behind the background of the scene. Discussion Forum 3- Anusha Rao Anusha Rao posted Dec 10, 2021 11:48 PM ☆ Subscribe Moonlight has many elements of cinematography throughout the film. Elements such as the point of view of the main character and the choice of music used at certain points of the film allow for the plot to develop and for the viewer to gain a better understanding of what the main character is feeling. At the start of the movie, we can see visual tension through the movement of the camera and the point of view of Little. When sitting at the table with Juan and Theresa we can interpret that Little feel safe and secure by the visual tension of his point of view. The camera shows when Little looks up to Theresa indicating that he trusts her and feels safe. We can also sense the strong connection between the three during this time as the camera creates tension by moving its angle from one character to another. Throughout the movie, we can observe the visual tension that has been created for the viewer to gain a better insight into how the main character is feeling at different times. Discussion 4 – Julia Karpilovsky ☆ Subscribe Julia Karpilovsky posted Dec 8, 2021 12:35 PM The editing of the opening sequence of Run Lola Run was a bunch of people shuffling through the crowd at a very fast pace with stops and a spotlight on the main characters of the movie. The quick shuffling of the crowd with short pauses to point out the important characters in the movie at the beginning was referencing the quickness of the film and all of the transitions becoming one. Later in the film, there were many jump cuts and a lot of chaos as Lola was running and going through the movie, but somehow the edits still seemed to flow well together and the edits were not harsh on the eye. The shuffling in the opening sequence informs the quick pace in the film. The spotlight on the main characters while the camera was still moving informs the ease of transition throughout the film which is what made it easy to follow the quick pace of the movie. Discussion 4 Ryberg Jon Ryberg posted Dec 6, 2021 10:25 AM ☆ Subscribe The opening sequence of Run Lola Run contained many unique camera angle transitions. The audience was immediately met with a ticking clock sound as an object swung on the screen, in and out of the frame showing an object manipulation essentially. The viewer is met with whispering and high pace music while the camera is in the middle of a huge crowd that is blurred, I believe this represents thrill and uncertainty that will transition throughout the movie. The camera pans to many people but lastly focuses on a police officer, who explains the rules of soccer then kicks a ball high and the camera followed the ball overhead, seemingly 75 feet high. It was an incredible angle and informed the viewer of the editing choices throughout the film.
